Artificial Turf of Cypress

When Hurricane Harvey delivered roughly 33 inches of rainfall across the Cy-Fair corridor over 72 hours in August 2017, it did more than flood homes and damage property. It changed the engineering context for every outdoor surface improvement in Harris County—including artificial turf. The Cypress Creek watershed, which drains from the Waller County headwaters through Cypress, Tomball, Bridgeland, and the Cy-Fair communities toward Addicks and Barker Reservoirs, produced runoff that exceeded both reservoirs' design capacity and resulted in uncontrolled releases into the Energy Corridor and surrounding neighborhoods.

The post-Harvey FEMA remapping that followed—finalized in the 2021 revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps—shifted thousands of Cy-Fair residential and commercial parcels from Zone X into Zone AE. That shift changed the engineering standard that governs what a correctly specified turf base looks like on those parcels. A base depth adequate for Zone X is not adequate for Zone AE. A drainage percolation rate that clears standing water in Zone X conditions may pond for hours or days under Zone AE extended-saturation conditions.

Our base of operations at 12802 Telge Road in Cypress places us within the Cypress Creek watershed's active zone—close enough to Bridgeland's retention pond grading, Towne Lake's reservoir perimeter, Fairfield's tributary proximity, and the Harris-Waller county line's soil transition to understand those conditions from direct field experience rather than map review alone.

The Cy-Fair corridor we serve regularly—Cypress, Tomball, Spring, Katy, Jersey Village, Hockley, Waller, Magnolia, Pinehurst, and Hempstead—covers the full range of the Cypress Creek watershed from its tidal influence near Addicks through its headwaters in Waller County. Each part of that range has different engineering requirements. A turf specification appropriate for Bridgeland is not the same as one appropriate for Hempstead, even though both fall under the general category of synthetic turf installation.

The post-Harvey period has clarified something that was always true but not always acted on: artificial turf installation in a high-rainfall, clay-soil, flood-mapped watershed requires the same engineering discipline that any other drainage improvement requires.
